Thank you for expressing interest in the Private Lesson program. This
program is one of the key ingredients to the success of our music
program. Hopefully, through great teachers and student practice, you
will hear much improvement this year in your child's musical
development. This letter is designed to let you know what to expect in
terms of teacher and student commitment to the private lesson.
Who are the teachers?
The teachers are either college upperclassmen or graduate students who
are taking intense courses on the instrument he/she will be teaching
your child. These teachers have been carefully screened and come highly
recommended so that we can guarantee a parent the best possible teacher
in terms of reliability and teaching.
Where are the lessons held?
Lessons will be scheduled in the afternoons and evenings on Monday
through Friday at the high school. There are practice rooms located in
a hallway next to the band room that will be available for the teachers
to use. Use the Stow Street entrance and go up the steps on the right
to find this area.
How much are the lessons?
Lessons are $10/half hour. This is a very reasonable rate when compared
to area music stores that charge up to $20.00/half hour.
Does my child attend every week?
YES. If you commit to taking private
lessons you are committing to having your child attend every lesson. I
have made sure that we have some of the best teachers in the area.
However, if students skip out on lessons because of a lack of commitment
on their part or their parents part, these teachers will leave. This is
the way that they make a living, so attendance is a must.
What constitutes canceling a lesson?
Lessons can be canceled for several reasons. Illness or absence from
school are probably the most common ones. But, life is very busy for all
of us and sometimes lessons must be canceled for a host of other
reasons. Please - call the private teacher at home and cancel the
lessons as far in advance as possible. NEVER CALL THE SCHOOL OR YOUR
DIRECTOR TO CANCEL THE LESSON. We cannot guarantee that we will receive
the message or contact the teacher in time. If a student is absent from
school, please call the teacher at home and let him/her know not to
expect your child.
What is the payment procedure?
Each teacher is different. Some teachers favor
payment a month at a time and some prefer weekly payment. Please discuss
this issue with the teachers individually.
Can I meet the teacher?
YES!! It is very important that you spend a few
moments introducing yourself to the private teacher. Make sure to ask
for his/her phone number and other contact information. Get to know a
little about them and don't be afraid to ask them about your child's
progress.
What should my child bring to the first
lesson?
In addition to taking their instruments, all of the students should plan
on bringing their Essential Elements book, a notebook and a pencil. Each
instructor will determine within the first lessons any other materials
that students may need. It is just as important for students to have
their materials for their private lessons as it is for band.
How do I sign up?
Simply call the person that teaches the instrument that your child is
playing. They will work with you to set up a lesson time. If you have
any other questions or concerns, please contact your child’s director at
the phone number listed on this handout.
